Construction Complete at QUT

31st March, 2017

Kane recently completed the refurbishment of the QUT S Block OJW seminar room at Gardens Point, creating a modern, flexible and open space for functions and seminars with amazing views over the river to Southbank from the refurbished balcony areas. New catering facilities, mechanical and electrical works were also included in the project.

The works included many special features such as the "Heradesign" acoustic panels procured from Austria and natural spotted gum timber wall panelling in the seminar room.  An advanced Dynalite Controlled lighting system was installed, as well as an automated control system for the sliding doors, motorised blinds and curtain tracks, and "user scene" lighting selection. The large video wall, concert grade speakers and AMX audio system all interfaced with the Dynalite control system.

Due to the site location, there were several challenging logistics and access issues. The solution was to prefabricate the structural steel façade panels offsite which were then craned onto the roof area of level 13 where the trusses were clad with pre-finished sheeting.  Powder coated aluminium battens were also installed prior to the panels being lifted back down to level 12 and positioned in place behind a temporary high tensile safety netting system.  There were significant safety benefits with this methodology as all works were completed from within the terrace area as opposed to the traditional installation sequence which would have involved placing workers outside the building line.  The safety netting provided fall from heights protection to workers and containment of falling objects to ensure the safety of the public below. There was also added programme efficiencies with this innovative sequencing of works which resulted in the project being delivered ahead of schedule despite periods of heavy rain.

Kane worked closely with Conrad Gargett throughout the project to maintain a high level of quality and delivery of architectural intent.
