Our team at Somerville House, including sub-contractors, recently undertook Awareness Training through Mates In Construction (“MIC”). The team at MIC approached our Workplace Health & Safety Manager, Graham Thornton, with the sad statistic that construction workers are more than 2 times likely to suicide than Australian men in general.
The training undertaken by the team alerted them to the types of behavior that might be a signal to someone contemplating suicide, and how to respond to it. It is hoped that mates will discuss with mates the issues that may be leading them to suicidal thoughts, and this will in turn lead to a positive outcome with help before it’s too late.
Individuals can take the training further by signing up with MIC to become a Connector, where they will connect any at risk workers with professional help.
