Kane were engaged to undertake tile, bedding and waterproofing removal from the existing awnings of the heritage listed QPAC building at Southbank. The project presented some unique challenges as the awnings were on the 4th floor, located directly over public thoroughfares unable to be closed off. Together with the access, there were noise restrictions throughout the day and into the evening while the facility hosts performances and events for up to 2,000 people at a time. For this reason Kane developed a scaffold protection system to protect all three working areas, together with temporary access bridges to link them together. All works were completed late at night between 11pm and 7am, to ensure comfort of event patrons.
Materials deliveries were programmed tightly with all materials needing to be transported to the work areas via one of the building’s lifts in small sized loads to suit the lift capacity.
The new drainage, waterproofing and tiling was completed within programme, in readiness for a major QPAC event.
