Completed in early 2012 this $3.5 million project was delivered under a lump sum contract for the University of Sydney.
The works consisted of:
- Construction of a new main switch room for the Blackburn Building (D06)
- Connection of a standby generator for 80 freezers in the Blackburn Building
- Refurbishment of Levels 1, 2 and 3 public spaces including Western and Main Stairs
- Upgrade to the Regional Switch room to Bosch 1A Building (D04)
- Heritage timber handrail modifications
- Emergency egress upgrade from level 1-7
The project was staged such that all areas were kept operational during construction.
Following commencement on site, the scope of works increased to include an emergency egress upgrade from Levels 1 to 7 and the additions of Room 241 (liquid nitrogen storage lab) and Room 201 (attendant quarters).
The Kane Project Team worksed through university holidays and carried out noisy works and necessary shutdowns after hours to ensure students, researchers and users were not inconvenienced. Due to the restricted working hours installation times had to be carefully planned and carried out within compressed program.
Innovations on the project included prefabricated corridor ceiling sections, bulkheads and framing, painted and fitted off site with services to expedite installation.
As the building remained operational during the works, stakeholder communication and feedback was vital in helping minimise distruption to the building occupants. Weekly meetings were held with user groups to help schedule works around those in workzone areas.
