This $10m project was delivered by fixed price lump sum after a competitive, selected tender. Completed in 2002, the facility provides a new home for the VCA School of Drama.

The New School of Drama is a colourful building which expresses the genre in the facade. A dramatical composition of painted corrugated iron and abstract geometrical windows creates a whimsical effect for the VCA School of Drama and enhances the surrounding streetscape.

The VCA School of Arts building was constructed on budget with nearly half of the project funding coming from grants.

Located in Southbank, the building comprises three levels constructed from insitu concrete, precast concrete and structural steel. Higher than usual floor-to-floor heights are a feature to accommodate performance spaces and open room for studios.

The building is finished with distinctive metal wall cladding and detailed metalwork screens.

Works were staged to allow for partial occupation of the building to enable performances to be undertaken prior to practical completion.
