Kane have undertaken 4 separate projects (a total of $9M) involving Stage 1, 2, 3 and 4, at Sydney Grammar Preparatory School, St Ives.
Stages 1, 2 and 4 involved a combination of alterations and additions to existing classrooms as well as the construction of new classrooms, practical activity areas, maintenance facilities and extensive landscaping and civil works. Working within a fully operational school and to a tight program, the Kane teams were faced with the many challenges associated with staged handover of buildings and the constant re-location of teachers and students.
Stage 3 involves the construction of a new 2 storey Library & Administration building which will further add to the schools outstanding learning & teaching facilities. With the successes of Stages 1, 2 & 3 and the relationships formed, Kane was awarded Stage 4 which involved the refurbishment and alterations of four additional buildings.
Kane overcame the many problems with working in an operational school including:
- Working around children through the provision of child protection forms for all site personnel and the careful planning to ensure separation of staff and the children
- Council restrictions on delivery times ensuring all deliveries occur outside the restricted times and planning for major works to occur on weekends
- Power and infrastructure upgrades/shut downs to school buildings outside school operational hours
With a view to reducing design costs for the client, Kane agreed to work from original services design documents and accommodate significant design changes. Through extensive coordination with subcontractors and limited input from the services consultants, the team was able to achieve the required outcomes in a cost effective and timely manner.
Through all of the projects, the team put forward proposals for cost savings. Kane were able to use our extensive pool of subcontractors and suppliers to source products that would achieve the best result for the lowest price and ultimately exceed the clients requested savings without compromising the quality of materials and finishes.
