The Kane Story

Kane Constructions commenced operations in Melbourne in 1973. Initially working from an office located above an antiques shop in High Street, Armadale, early projects included a number of Catholic Primary Schools (Jobs 23, 37, 55 & 57), a range of facilities for local councils, work for the CSIRO, a private residence in Toorak (Job 2) and a waste water treatment plant in Kensington (Job 75).

In 1980 Kane was awarded the $5m contract to complete the West Gippsland Arts Centre in Warragul (Job 87). The centre contained a 490 seat proscenium arch theatre and a 220 seat performing arts space. The project heralded Kane as a serious player in the Victorian construction market. It was completed in 1982 and remains a centrepiece for the local community today.

The business experienced consistent growth during the 1980's by consolidating its position in established fields and branching into new sectors of the industry. High profile projects included the refurbishment of the Dome at the Royal Exhibition Building (Job 287), restoration of the spires at Newman College (Job 165) at the University of Melbourne (designed by Walter Burley Griffin) and major works at Raheen (Jobs 171, 224 & 274) - former residence of the Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne.

The 1990's saw Kane continue to grow. Client relationships developed during the previous two decades were further strengthened with major projects being carried out at Monash University - the Andrew Syme Business School (Job 423) and the School of Art & Design (Job 550) with Denton Corker Marshall and the Geelong Hospital - Andrew Love Centre (Job 278, 1991) and the Bellarine Centre (Job 554, 1999).

In 1995 Melbourne was appointed as host city for the Australian Grand Prix and Kane was subsequently awarded the contract for the new Pit Buildings and temporary structures. A relationship was forged with the Grand Prix Corporation that continues to the present.

The 1990's also saw Kane expand its operations offshore. The University of the South Pacific, Western Samoa (Job 416) was completed in 1996 with Peddle Thorp Architects, and projects were also undertaken in Papua New Guinea - a prison facility in Port Moresby (Job 560), schools in Clifton, Baliora and Valilile (Job 560) and a broadcasting facility in Kavieng on New Ireland (Job 562), and Pakistan - the Australian High Commission, Islamabad (Job 613).

Job 500, a 50-bed acute psychiatric unit at the Alfred Hospital was completed in 1998, and the decade was rounded out with the opening of the Sydney Office in 1999 and the commencement of our first project in New South Wales - working with Grocon on the GPO at No.1 Martins Place.

Operations in New South Wales quickly gained momentum with a large Construction Management contract being awarded at the University of NSW (Job 740). This was shortly followed by a wide variety of projects including a new bookstore for Borders (Job 798), various contracts with the Department of Defence, a highly complex PC3 laboratory at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute at Menangle (Job 838) and the delivery of multiple facilities for the University of Sydney.

With the award of the Dandenong Performing Arts Centre in December 2003, Kane Constructions notched up Job 1000. The $12m project delivered a landmark building for the local community combining the restored elegance of the original Town Hall structure with the striking architecture of the new 530 seat Drum Theatre.

A Queensland office was established in Brisbane in 2006 reflecting a common pattern in the commercial construction industry as many key Clients, Architects and Consultants established offices along the east coast of Australia. The movement of several key staff with over 50 years combined experience in Kane Melbourne ensured that the industry relationships and the successful “Kane Culture” was seamlessly transplanted to the Sunshine State. Within the first few years of operation in Queensland, Kane successfully delivered two iconic projects: the restoration of Old Government House and the redevelopment of King George Square.
