Kane Constructions Nail Top Master Builder Award

9th August, 2017

On Friday evening Master Builders Association Victoria hosted the 2017 Excellence in Construction Awards at Crown Palladium.

Before a record-breaking crowd of nearly 700 guests, Kane Constructions received top honours as Master Builder of the Year (Commercial) for the second year running for the $66 million University of Melbourne Arts West Redevelopment.

Joint Managing Director Richard Frisina said, "It was an absolute pleasure to partner with our client the University of Melbourne, project manager Aurecon, architects ARM and Architectus, and other consultants including Irwin Consult, Slattery and LCI to complete the design and deliver this iconic building. Most importantly, I would like to thank our amazing project team, led by project manager Paul Christian."

The Arts West Redevelopment is the Faculty of Arts' most significant infrastructure project in recent years, giving undergraduate students access to world-class and dynamic spaces, and equipping academic staff with a new purpose-built teaching and research environment based on collaborative, interactive and object based learning. The external facade supports the emphasis on object-based learning and consists of the University’s cultural collections embedded into profiled steel blades which wrap around the building and are visible at certain angles as people pass by.

“This building has an unexpected degree of personality; its interior spaces have a notable but restrained multi-ethnic flavour that creates a pleasant educational atmosphere,” Master Builders CEO Radley de Silva said. “The way this project is put together is compelling and invites exploration.”

“On Master Builders’ 142nd anniversary, we are very fortunate to have high-calibre projects such as this one to demonstrate the significance of Victoria’s building and construction industry and contribute to its distinguished heritage.” Mr de Silva said.

In addition to securing the highest accolade of Master Builder of the Year, Kane also received the following awards:

- Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings $30 million - $80 million for The University of Melbourne Arts West Redevelopment

- Best Specialist Contractor Collaboration Award for the South Melbourne Vertical School, South Melbourne

Kane will now go on to compete at the Master Builders Association National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards in Hobart in November.  Kane congratulate all other award winners.
