Kane Constructions has been appointed as early works contractor for the Australian Institute for Infectious Disease (AIID), a landmark facility in Melbourne’s world-leading Biomedical Precinct. Led by the University of Melbourne in partnership with the Doherty Institute and Burnet Institute, and supported by the Victorian Government, the AIID will significantly expand Australia’s capacity in infectious disease research, diagnostics, vaccine development and pandemic response.
The early works involve demolition of four existing buildings, extensive hazardous material removal, site preparation, piling platform construction, services isolation and establishment of an amenities compound. Delivered within a fully operational campus, the program has a strong sustainability focus and includes a commitment to direct part of the contract value towards engaging underrepresented groups.
This stage prepares the site for the $550 million AIID facility, a 17-level, 42,000m² building that will house over 1,000 scientists and public health experts. Featuring high-containment laboratories, robotic biobanking, clinical trial capacity and industry engagement spaces, it will provide a purpose-built environment that accelerates medical breakthroughs and improves health outcomes across Australia and the region.
