In April 2018, Kane Constructions was engaged under an Early Contractor Involvement phase for the Deakin University Building KA Infill Refurbishment. The ECI process involved working with the design team to finalise documentation, completing numerous investigations for existing services, structure and architectural, hazardous material sensitive equipment audits, preparing construction management plans and staging plans for the future main works project.

In late November 2018, Kane was awarded the $23 million contract to deliver the main works at the Waurn Ponds campus.

This logistically challenging project was completed over two stages. Stage 1 involved the construction of a new three level infill to the existing quadrangle while the facility remained fully operational.

The existing central courtyard of Building KA was infilled to create additional accommodation on Levels 3, 4 and 5. The infill extension has enabled establishment of additional accommodation to suit the updated needs and expanding requirements of the staff and students. The project also incorporated the refurbishment of the existing KA Building Level 5 to create a contiguous and modern environment on the Level 5 floor plate.

A portion of the contract to infill Levels 3, 4 and 5 at Deakin University Waurn Ponds involved the removal of combustible cladding to the entire building façade and replacement with solid aluminium cladding and associated sub-framing.

The project was split into two separable portions, with SP1 completion in November 2019, and SP2 completed in July 2020.
