The University of Queensland Molecular Biosciences & Hawken CMM Library Refurbishment consisted of two separable portions. The first was the internal refurbishment to levels one and two of the Hawken building and the second concurrent portion of works included the construction of an additional level to the Molecular Biosciences building to create new office space.
The project scope included a full internal demolition back to base build, with structural enabling works and a complete fit-out; including new ceilings, partitions, floor coverings, medical gasses, specialist electromagnetic interference and clean room paneling to facilitate the universities state-of-the-art research equipment.
Challenging aspects of the project included working in an operational environment, noise and vibration restrictions not exceeding 60dB and an inadequate structural slab to build off, resolved with carbon fibre reinforcement strapping and lightweight concrete mixes.
The facility experienced voltage issues with the electrical supply to the building, therefore Kane initiated the install of a UPS system to counteract the issue. Kane provided the client with multiple cost saving options; which were well received. Kane were able to proceed forward with an alternative furniture package, a Kingspan clean room (Dagard specified), as well as alternative gates to the building, which provided the client with substantial cost savings.
Works were completed in mid-2018.
