Kane Constructions has completed the delivery of the VCAT accommodation fitout at 308 La Trobe Street in Melbourne’s CBD for Court Services Victoria.
The project involved the transformation of approximately 14,000 square metres across 10 levels, creating contemporary, fit-for-purpose spaces to support VCAT’s operations. The completed facility includes hearing rooms, mediation spaces, offices and shared amenities, all designed to support functionality, accessibility and day-to-day efficiency.
Works were carefully staged to ensure minimal disruption within the occupied building. Warm shell tenancies at ground level and cold shell spaces across Levels 19–27 were progressively converted into fully operational environments, requiring detailed coordination and a high level of planning.
Sustainability outcomes were a key focus throughout the fitout, with the project targeting a 6 Star NABERS Energy rating and a 5 Star Green Star Performance rating, alongside a significant reduction in operational carbon emissions. The building incorporates renewable energy initiatives, touchless entry systems, end-of-trip facilities and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
First Nations design elements, including art, artefacts and language, are thoughtfully integrated throughout the spaces, developed in collaboration with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
Artwork contributors include Tommy Day III (Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta and Wemba Wemba), whose work is featured across bulkheads, carpet and cultural artefacts; Aunty Fiona Clarke (Kirrae Whurrong, with ancestral ties to Wurundjeri, Boon Whurrong and Bunurong), whose artwork is expressed through glazing decals; and Robert Young (Gunnai, Wiradjuri, Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta and Bunurong), who provided the Acknowledgement of Country.
Located in a highly connected part of the city, the upgraded VCAT accommodation provides improved access to essential tribunal services for staff, members and visitors, supporting the continued delivery of justice across Victoria.
