Kane Constructions delivered a significant expansion and refurbishment of the Geelong Magistrates’ Court to accommodate a new Specialist Family Violence Court, completed within a live operating environment under a Lump Sum contract.
The works included construction of a new two-level building connected to the existing court, delivering additional courtrooms, safe waiting areas, private interview rooms and remote witness facilities. New secure and public circulation paths were introduced, with separate entry and exit points for applicants, respondents, staff and the judiciary.
At ground level, the project delivered a new covered public entry, security screening area, secure waiting spaces, staff entry and triage areas, along with new lifts and stairs providing accessible vertical circulation. Secure links were also established between the court and roadside access, with associated reconfiguration of staff areas and parking.
Levels 1 and 2 provide new courtrooms and ancillary service areas, including dedicated safe waiting areas, interview rooms, amenities and remote witness rooms, with direct connections to existing judicial chambers via new secure links.
All works were carefully staged to allow the court to remain fully operational throughout construction. Demolition and high-impact activities were undertaken outside court hours, supported by an agreed noisy works matrix and close coordination with neighbouring stakeholders.
The completed facility delivers modern, purpose-built spaces that prioritise safety, privacy and accessibility for court users, staff and the wider Geelong community.
