Kane Constructions has been engaged by Metro South Health & Hospital Service to undertake the large-scale refurbishment of the maternity facility within the existing and operational Logan Hospital, on Brisbane’s southside.

The works will be completed over 12 individual stages, which incorporate a series of sprints to construct new facilities followed by hospital decant and mobilisation to occupy the newly completed spaces. Clinical interface and ongoing liaison for the project is critical to ensuring the hospital is able to provide continuity of care to patients.

The newly constructed facilities are set to include birthing suites, special care nursery, general wards, a new ambulance entry, reception, outpatients lounge and general office spaces. Adaptions to existing services, including medical gas form part of the works. At all stages of the project, careful planning is called for to ensure continuity and provision of temporary supplies as necessary.

Throughout the contract period, a rolling process of EWIS and fire hydrant replacement works will continue throughout the main hospital. These works will require micromanagement and extreme care owing to the nature of working within a live hospital environment with added pressure from the ever-present COVID-19 pandemic. Temporary pods and zip walls will ensure infection control is well managed throughout the works.

As works are situated within live clinical spaces and directly adjacent to operating theatres, Kane have engaged and are working closely with an acoustician to develop a temporary treatment scheme. Noise attenuation and temporary acoustic curtains are being installed with environmental monitoring stations being placed in key locations to minimise the impact of noise and vibration to clinical services.

The project also entails significant civil works, including the construction of groundwater management and retaining walls to enable widening and construction of a new access road and boundary relocation. Access will be maintained for service vehicles throughout the duration of the project.

All works being undertaken within this project form part of the wider Logan Hospital Expansion Project, and the project requires close collaboration with other contractors’ working on the campus and high priority placed on stakeholder management.

Project works are due to be completed in the third-quarter of 2023.
