Kane Constructions were engaged by the Department of Education to demolish an existing classroom block and construct a new vibrant multi-storey learning centre, within the existing and operational Mansfield State High School campus.

The three-storey building comprises of 12 classrooms, four flexible learning areas, change room facilities, an open undercroft, amenities, staff rooms, and associated facilities.

Additionally, Kane constructed a 160m covered walkway providing linked access between the new multi-storey general learning area and the multipurpose hall, which Kane previously constructed for the school.

Given the locality of the new building being in the middle of the school grounds, Kane was challenged with the task of having no obvious access routes directly to the site. To resolve this challenge, Kane proposed the installation of a temporary roadway through the school’s oval to provide direct access. The implementation of this system allowed students, teachers and staff to safely access both sides of the fenced roadway to ensure segregation between vehicle and pedestrian interaction. Kane also installed an intersection with a set of automated boom gates that enabled for safe access for pedestrian movement.

Difficulties arose during the construction with regards to maneuvering and transporting material to each level of the new building. Kane’s team took advantage of the design of the atrium areas where the team were able to use a 17m, 4-tonne telehandler to load materials on the upper floors. Once the edge protection of the atrium area was removed, the installation of a harness system allowed workers to continue to safely access and retrieve materials from the loading area.

This project is the third delivered by Kane in a series for Mansfield State High School in what has become a very successful and collaborative working relationship.
