Barwon Health, Paediatric Emergency Department

Shortlisted for National Health Facility Award

Delivered in one of Victoria’s busiest hospitals, this project demanded an exceptional standard of construction execution. Kane completed the works across three meticulously staged phases, maintaining full hospital operations while navigating live environments, constrained access and ageing infrastructure.

More than 60 planned service isolations were coordinated without disruption, supported by 3D modelling, off-peak construction and precise stakeholder management. Every activity was timed and sequenced around the critical functioning of the hospital, with temporary service routes and structural adjustments implemented to manage risk and maintain continuity.

The new facility incorporates acute and short-stay treatment areas, triage, resuscitation and consultation rooms, as well as administration spaces and a new Renal Workshop. Built with a strong focus on durability, performance and clinical requirements, the project exemplifies what can be achieved through disciplined planning, technical precision and collaborative delivery.

Paula Fox Melanoma Cancer Centre

Shortlisted for National Commercial / Industrial Construction Award, Over $100 Million

Delivered for Alfred Health in collaboration with Lyons Architecture, the $100 million-plus Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre sets a new benchmark in complex healthcare infrastructure.

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s medical precinct, the six-storey facility brings together high-specification clinical spaces, PC2-certified laboratories, and patient-focused environments designed to support cutting-edge research and care. The Kane team implemented a series of technical innovations, including prefabricated construction methodologies and advanced 3D modelling to meet the project’s intricate compliance and performance requirements.

A defining architectural feature of the building is its curved glass façade, designed to evoke the texture and fluidity of human skin. Achieving this vision required full-scale prototype testing and bespoke installation techniques, representing a significant engineering and design accomplishment.

Beyond construction, Kane extended the project’s purpose through a partnership with SunSmart, launching a melanoma awareness initiative that offered free skin checks and education to all site personnel, an effort that resulted in the early detection of potential melanoma cases and reinforced the project’s broader social impact.

Shortlisted for three awards:

National Commercial / Industrial Construction Award – $50 Million to $100 Million

National Commercial Historical Restoration / Renovation Award

National Construction Master Builder of the Year

Delivered for the Australian War Memorial with GMB Architects and Scott Carver, the New Southern Entrance and Main Building works showcase Kane’s expertise in complex heritage construction.

The project involved creating a new subterranean entrance below the existing forecourt, a 12-tonne glass oculus, and a re-shaped Parade Ground accommodating 4,400 spectators. Extensive underpinning and excavation were completed while the 83-year-old heritage building remained operational.

Designed with respect for the Memorial’s iconic façade, the works enhance accessibility, safety and visitor flow while preserving Australia’s most significant commemorative landmark for generations to come.
