Kane to deliver state-of-the-art research facility for Monash University in Parkville

10th June, 2025

Kane Constructions has been appointed by Monash University to deliver the 343 Royal Parade Parkville Revitalisation Project, transforming two interconnected buildings into a world-class research centre.

Delivered under a Design and Construct head contract, the project will refurbish the building, previously owned by the CSIRO, to create a 6,800 m² state-of-the-art facility supporting cutting-edge research and innovation for the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Located on a prominent 5,000 m² site, the buildings span six levels, including plant levels, and were originally constructed in the 1960s and 1990s. The redevelopment includes major internal upgrades to deliver modern research offices and laboratories, including PC2-certified laboratories across three levels. The ground floor will accommodate support spaces such as storage, dangerous goods areas, incubator spaces and reception zones.

A key feature of the design is the integration of meeting and collaboration spaces to support engagement between academia and industry, with flexibility built in to accommodate future growth. The upper levels will be dedicated to plant and essential building services. The design, by DesignInc Melbourne, is in compliance with the University’s Sustainability framework.

The project requires careful planning and stakeholder management due to its location in a highly active research and residential precinct, with Kane’s experience in complex, live environments critical to ensuring safe and seamless delivery.

Enabling demolition works were completed in early 2024 by Monash University, with the main works now underway and set for completion by the end of 2026.
